The French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN) announced yesterday that 39 nuclear societies representing 50,000 scientists from 36 countries on five continents have jointly signed a declaration committing them to fight climate change.

The scientists signed the pact during the International Congress on Advances on Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP) in Nice, France. The declaration is a major part of the “Nuclear for Climate” global initiative that recognizes nuclear power is a low-carbon energy that is effective in fighting climate change.

The scientists said that each country needs to access the widest possible range of low-carbon technologies, including nuclear energy, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and meet other energy goals.
They called for the new United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change protocols to
include nuclear energy in its climate funding mechanisms.
