The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Thursday that the Russian Federation’s National Research Nuclear University (NRNU) in Moscow will offer a master’s degree program endorsed by the IAEA.

The NRNU will become the second university in the world to offer an IAEA-endorsed master’s degree in nuclear technology management, with the University of Manchester in England being the first.

The master’s program follows a framework that has been developed in the collaborative International Nuclear Management Academy (INMA), which consists of nuclear engineering and business faculty members from multiple academic institutions. The INMA framework includes courses that focus on advanced topics on management of nuclear technology, engineering and related sciences.

IAEA and NRNU officials signed the agreement this week during the 59th IAEA General Conference, making the institution an official member of the INMA framework.

“Many universities have already expressed interest in implementing an INMA program,” Mikhail Chudakov, IAEA deputy director general and head of the Department of Nuclear Energy, said.

The IAEA said the master’s degree program at the university is expected to begin in 2016.
