Nikolai Spasskiy, deputy CEO of ROSATOM, recently held negotiations with a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the leadership of Tero Varjoranta, deputy director general and head of the Department of Safeguards, to discuss the implementation of nuclear safeguards.

The officials discussed the important ways in which cooperation between Russia and the IAEA can be mutually beneficial and talked about how nuclear safeguards can be applied at the International Uranium Enrichment Center (IUEC) in Angarsk.

The officials specifically discussed the Russian safeguards support program (RSSP), which trains staff and tests mechanisms for various safeguard activities.

Implementation aspects of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, an agreement to regulate and monitor Iran’s nuclear program, also were discussed in detail.

After the negotiations ended, officials from both sides signed an agreement to cooperate on the guiding principles of RSSP. The agreement details important procedures and measures that will be used to apply RSSP in practical ways, and how the program relates to ROSATOM’s operating principles.
