L-3 MAPPS said late last week that it has been hired to upgrade the digital control computers (DCC) at Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica S.A.’s CNE Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania.

DCCs monitor reactor and other plant functions.

L-3 MAPPS said the upgrade will include installation of a Windows operating system.

“[Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica S.A.] (SNN) has worked with L-3 MAPPS since 1984 to develop the Cernavoda plant computers for Units 1 and 2 and the full scope operator training simulator,” CNE Cernavoda Director Ionel Bucur said. “We are pleased to have long-lasting partnerships with reliable suppliers like L-3 MAPPS to ensure the continued safe operation of our generating assets.”

SNN serves as a Romanian utility company that is owned by the state. L-3 MAPPS states that the upgrades are anticipated to be completed within the first part of 2017. DCCs are utilized with reactors designed by Atomic ENergy of Canada Ltd.

“We are honored to continue our long-standing working relationship with SNN and to have another opportunity to demonstrate why L-3 MAPPS is the de facto maker of CANDU plant simulators,” L-3 MAPPS Vice President for Marketing and Sales, Michael Chatlani said.
