Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL) announced last week that it is celebrating 40 years of operation, during which it has transported approximately 2,000 containers of nuclear material without an incident that resulted in radioactive spillage.

The company has operated eight ships over its lifetime, and currently three vessels are managing the transportation of nuclear material. The company opened in 1975 and, working with partners in France and Japan, has completed approximately 180 shipments globally.

“It’s a really special day for Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited,” PNTL Chairman and Chief Executive with the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority John Clarke said. “By carrying out 40 years of safe and secure shipments, we’ve established ourselves as world leaders at transporting nuclear materials by sea. Most importantly, we’re immensely proud of our flawless nuclear safety record.”

Recent shipments included nuclear waste from the United Kingdom to Japan and involvement in global. nonproliferation efforts at reducing nuclear and radiological material.

PNTL operates as a subsidiary of International Nuclear Services Ltd. and is owned by AREVA and several Japanese nuclear companies.

“In 40 years, PNTL has gone from strength to strength and we are now recognized globally for our expertise,” PNTL Director Mark Jarvis said. “I would like to thank all of PNTL’s crew members over the years, and our partners and customers for their support in making PNTL such a success.”
