Ontario Provincial Parliament Member Bob Chiarelli issued a statement following the recent announcement of Bruce Power LP President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne’s plan to retire.

The search for a new CEO and president is expected to begin shortly. Chiarelli said in an interview with CNW newswire that new leadership at this time will allow the new president and CEO to settle in ahead of the scheduled refurbishment in 2020.

“For more than a decade, Duncan’s vision and commitment to excellence transformed Bruce Power into one of North America’s leading energy companies with a proud culture of safety, innovation and continuous improvement that is apparent to anyone who visits the Bruce site,” Chiarelli said. Ontario owes the clean, reliable and affordable electricity system that we all enjoy in no small part to the revitalization of the Bruce A reactors, which is an important part of Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan and which Duncan successfully led.”

Chiarelli said in the statement that Hawthorne has indicated he plans to be involved with the Canadian nuclear industry following his retirement.
