Oak Ridge National Laboratory issued the following announcement on Feb. 21.

Timothy D. Burchell, a researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

ASME cited Burchell for his international recognition in the field of material properties of graphite and carbon.

Burchell is the nuclear graphite team leader in the Materials Science and Technology Division’s Nuclear Materials Science and Technology group. He was previously Carbon Materials Technology group leader and managed the Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Graphite Program.

His research interests include fracture behavior and modeling of nuclear-grade graphite, the effects of neutron damage on the structure and properties of fission and fusion reactor carbon and graphite materials, radiation creep of graphites, the thermal physical properties of carbon materials and the impact behavior of carbon-carbon composites.

Burchell, who is also a fellow of the American Carbon Society, received his doctorate in materials science from the University of Bath, United Kingdom.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. DOE’s Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit http://science.energy.gov/.
