NuScale Power and ANSYS have reached a multi-year agreement that would provide the former with access to engineering simulation software from ANSYS, they announced on Thursday.

They said that through this extended partnership the company will be able to minimize the development time for small modular reactor prototypes (SMR).

“For 45 years, ANSYS has been the nuclear industry’s gold standard in simulation,” Randy Morrill, lead engineer for NuScale, said. “As the industry’s demands grow, the challenges become far more complex and require innovative engineering solutions. This agreement with ANSYS enables us to continue to develop accurate and reliable products that our customers rely on.”

Through the ANSYS software systems, NuScale will be able to simulate module containment, structural integrity and thermal hydraulic aspects of proposed designs, without having to build physical prototypes and other testing activity.

“The nuclear industry maintains a sharp focus on delivering reliable and safe energy in a very challenging cost and regulatory environment,” Ahmad Haidari, global director for the energy industry at ANSYS, said. “We are thrilled to provide NuScale with best-in-class engineering simulation solutions that will enable the company to further improve reactor module safety and reduce construction and operational costs, while meeting regulatory and industry requirements.”
