Nuclear Matters Leadership Council member David Wright recently spoke at U.S. Women in Nuclear’s Region II Conference in Columbia, South Carolina.

Wright used his remarks to emphasize the importance of keeping nuclear plants in operation and said nuclear energy is responsible for providing one fifth of the country’s 24/7 electricity supply.

Wright also said nuclear energy will become more important in the near future as the nation works toward hitting carbon-reduction targets. Wright said nuclear energy is currently the source of 63 percent of the country’s carbon-free energy.

In South Carolina, nuclear energy provides 97 percent of the state’s carbon-free energy. Nationwide, U.S. nuclear plants overall provide 63 percent of the country’s carbon-free energy.
