A joint study between the S.C. Electric & Gas Co. (SCE&G) and X-energy conducted a study on the latter’s Xe-100 pebble-bed nuclear reactor concept for technical and economic feasibility, they announced on Wednesday.

In the study, the teams found that the reactor concept would be a viable option for expanding power generation at existing coal powered stations or replacing coal-fired generators in both the technical and economic sense.

They report that the variable output to load is approximately 25 percent and that the reactor would help a facility meet regulatory requirements relating to carbon emissions, due to the reactor not emitting greenhouse gasses.

“The Xe-100 is an exciting and dynamic technology with a number of benefits for any utility’s long-range plans,” according to the announcement. “Combined with the high technological readiness of pebble-bed designs, the Xe-100 can make a significant and lasting contribution to a clean energy future in the United States.”

The announcement states that the smaller nature of the Xe-100 would allow its implementation without causing major disruptions to power networks and would result in smaller capital commitments as opposed to larger reactor units.

“We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with the great folks at SCE&G on this study,” X-energy COO Doug McCuistion said. “The insights gained here will help us continue to make the Xe-100 a reality, and we look forward to further collaboration with SCE&G.”
