The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will host an open house on Wednesday, March 23 on its 2015 performance assessment for Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island 1 nuclear power plant, which the commission determined operated safely throughout last year.

The NRC uses a color-coded system to rate its inspection findings and performance indicators, with green having the lowest safety significance before moving to white, yellow and red. Throughout 2015, Three Mile Island’s findings were all within the green range, meaning that the plant is currently subject to the NRC’s standard level of oversight, yet still consisting of resident inspectors and thousands of hours of monitoring.

“Our annual assessments allow us to step back at regular intervals and size up plant performance. However, we view oversight of each facility as an ongoing responsibility,” RC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman said. “In the case of Three Mile Island 1, the plant’s current performance qualifies for our normal level of oversight.”

The open house will be in Middletown, Pennsylvania, at the Londonderry Township Municipal Building from 4:30 p.m to 6 p.m. The Three Mile Island resident inspectors will be available to answer public questions, as will other NRC staff members.
