The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently scheduled an open house meeting to discuss the most recent assessment concerning the operations at the Braidwood and Dresden nuclear power plants through 2014.

The assessment states

Units 1 and 2 are considered safe through 2014, and the plant will receive normal NRC oversight and regulations throughout 2015.

The assessment concerning Dresden states both Units 2 and 3 also operated safely throughout 2014. There was some concern about Unit 3’s electromatic relief valve, which is created to reduce reactor pressure in case of an emergency. For this reason, Unit 3 will receive slightly more oversight from the NRC during 2015 to guarantee the safety of the unit and the plant.

Braidwood and Dresden, both of which are two-unit nuclear power plants, are in Illinois, 25 miles southwest of Joliet. Exelon Generation Corp. operates both plants.

NRC staff will be available to informally discuss the plant, the NRC, and its assessments and regulations.

“We host open houses, which are informal meetings between the NRC staff and the public, to have an open dialogue with local residents about the plant and other NRC-related issues of interest to the public,” NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia Pederson said. “It is a great opportunity for people to meet our resident inspectors and other staff and a great opportunity for us to speak with people who live near the plant.”

The meeting will be Tuesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Braidwood City Hall, 141 W. Main St., in Braidwood.
