NRC to hold Oyster Creek Plant assessment meeting

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold its annual assessment meeting regarding the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant on May 28 in Manahawkin, New Jersey.

The NRC states that throughout 2014, the facility operated in a safe manner and experienced little issue until the end of the year. The facility had been elevated to a higher level of significance in the NRC color-coded system and induced further oversight from the NRC.

Colors go from green to white to yellow to red, with red indicating a serious safety threat. The Oyster Creek facility was elevated to white after unplanned shutdowns occurred at the facility. A supplemental investigation found one yellow inspection finding, indicating a significance in safety performance and one white inspection finding. The yellow indication was given due to the electromatic relief valves being of an old design matter.

“Once Exelon notifies us of its readiness for these inspections, we will review whether the company has taken the steps necessary to properly address these issues and prevent recurrence,” NRC Region I Administrator, Dan Dorman said.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Manahawkin. Residents will be able to gain information on the plant’s safety performance and the NRC’s oversight activity.
