Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff will be available to answer questions on the commission’s performance assessment of McGuire Nuclear Station, near Huntersville, North Carolina, at an open house, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the McGuire Energy Explorium, 13339 Hagers Ferry Road, in Huntersville.

The open house will center around the NRC’s letter to the plant’s officials that detailed the commission’s findings throughout 2015.

The McGuire plant operated safely throughout 2015, earning the NRC’s best ratings – green – for all inspection findings and performance indicators. The NRC’s color-coded system ranges from green, or a low safety significance, through white, yellow and red. Due to McGuire’s green ratings, the plant will be subject to the NRC’s standard level of oversight. The NRC’s resident inspectors for the plant will be at the open house to answer any questions local community members might have.

“We invite the public to visit with us and find out what we’re doing to ensure McGuire and other nuclear plants are operated safely,” NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney said. “These annual meetings offer an opportunity for everyone, and especially people who live near the plant, to learn about our inspection and oversight programs.”
