The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on Monday that it will hold an open house Aug. 31 regarding the NRC assessment of the DC Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Michigan.

The facility, located in Bridgman, Michigan, houses two nuclear reactors. In their assessment, the NRC found that the nuclear reactors were operating within safety and operational requirements and were given a green inspection finding and remain under normal NRC oversight levels.

Within the NRC color code system, a green inspection finding indicates that little to no issues were found during inspection. The colors go to white and red levels should an issue be found in operation or the reactor itself.

Inspections were carried out by the facility’s assigned resident inspectors and inspection specialists based in the regional NRC office.

This open house will begin at 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library on Market Street in St. Joseph, Michigan.

“We host open houses, which are informal meetings between the NRC staff and the public ,to have an open dialogue with local residents about the plant and other NRC-related issues of interest to the public,” NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia Pederson said. “It is a great opportunity for people to meet our resident inspectors and other staff; and a great opportunity for us to speak with people who live near the plant.”
