The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) seeks public comments for its second draft supplement to an environmental study associated with the license renewal for the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, New York, the NRC said this week.

The supplemental report consists of information that the NRC obtained after the publication of Indian Point’s first environmental supplemental statement in 2013. The supplemental report includes an evaluation of new cost estimates relating to accident-mitigation alternatives, as well as updated information on the plant’s impact on local aquatic wildlife.

The supplemental report also includes information obtained after a Generic Environmental Impact Statement relating to the storage of spent nuclear fuel at the facility. It also addresses additional environmental concerns and new consultations related to the Endangered Species Act.

Public input will be accepted between the publication date of a federal-register notice by the Environmental Protection Agency, expected in early January, and March 4. Comments can be submitted to the www.regulations.gov website.

The Indian Point Energy Center houses two nuclear reactors. The facility’s initial renewal application was submitted in April 2007.
