The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on Monday that it is seeking public commentary on the environmental impact report relating to the process of considering the Fermi Generating Station for license renewal.
Specifically, the power station, owned and operated by DTE Electric Co., is seeking renewal of its second operating unit for an additional 20 years. The NRC reported that on a preliminary basis there are no environmental concerns that would preclude the license being extended.
The NRC will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 2, between 7 and 9 p.m. ET in Monroe, Michigan, and NRC staff will be presenting the report and its findings. This meeting will be taking place at Monroe County Community College’s La-Z-Boy Center on South Raisinville Road.
All applications that are submitted to the NRC are subject to technical safety and environmental impact reviews. A related notice has been published on the Federal Register, and individuals may submit written comments through Monday, Dec. 28.
The Fermi nuclear plant is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio, and is currently authorized to operate up until March 20, 2025. With the renewal, this would be extended to 2045.
