Exelon Corp. announced on Friday that an emergency drill will be taking place at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station on Oct. 20.

This drill will be evaluating the site’s emergency plans through emergency situation scenarios that will test plant personnel and offsite emergency personnel in their ability to respond to an emergency.

“At Exelon, we take our emergency preparedness responsibilities very seriously,” Nine Mile Point Site Vice President Pete Orphanos said. “Throughout the year, we work with a dedicated team of emergency management professionals across the state with one goal in mind: keeping families safe in the unlikely event of an emergency. We greatly appreciate our strong relationship with county and state professionals.”

The company states that the plant takes on regular drills of this kind and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission evaluates the facility’s emergency preparedness capabilities every two years.

This exercise will begin in the morning and is expected to conclude in the afternoon. Residents in the area should expect to see emergency vehicles and will likely hear public address announcements from the site. They will also likely see increased activity near facilities used in emergency response.

The site is located approximately seven miles northeast of Oswego, New York.
