Exelon Corp. said on Monday that Mark Kanavos has been appointed vice president of the Byron Generating Station in Byron, Illinois.
This position is in charge of overall operations of the facility and is tasked with informing the public of any changes in the facility’s operational status. Kanavos has served within the nuclear industry for 34 years and previously served as vice president at the Braidwood Generating Station in Braceville, Illinois.
“This facility is an important economic and employment engine of the region, and I am eager to help continue our safe production of electricity for many years to come,” Kanavos said. “We have had a good relationship with residents and stakeholders in the cities around Byron Station. That positive aspect will remain strong.”
The Byron facility is capable of producing approximately 2,300 megawatts of electricity, which the company said is enough for approximately 2.3 million average homes in the U.S. It is located in Ogle County, approximately 25 miles southwest of Rockford.
Prior to his tenure at the Braidwood facility, Kanavos served as a plant manager at the Clinton Power Station in Clinton, Illinois, and a plant manager at Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Glen Rose, Texas.
Exelon operates 11 nuclear facilities at six locations in Illinois. Approximately 48 percent of the state’s electricity is produced at Exelon facilities.
