A joint project between the Partnership for Global Security (PGS) and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the Global Nexus Initiative (GNI) has issued its first memo on policy regarding nuclear energy on Wednesday.

The GNI report said the role of nuclear energy in carbon-emission reduction should not be ignored by policy makers and calls for policies that support nuclear power programs and those that garner public support, security and safety in the nuclear-generation industries of the world.

“These recommendations are reflective of discussions among a diverse group of international professionals collaborating on the GNI Working Group,” PGS President Kenneth Luongo said. “With the potential expansion of nuclear power, policies must be in place to strengthen international confidence in the nuclear programs of all states.”

In the policy memo, the GNI Working Group discusses the current and potential contributions to climate-change mitigation that nuclear generation can provide. The GNI held a workshop in September, during which many of these recommendations were discussed and formulated. The working group will be holding another workshop in 2016 to formulate its next memo on policy.

“As the world focuses on the climate negotiations underway in Paris, these recommendations send a powerful message that nuclear energy must be an integral part of the solution for significant carbon-emission reductions,” Everett Redmond, NEI senior director of fuel cycle and technology policy, said.
