Following passage of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 384 by the state’s legislative branch, NEI Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs Alex Flint issued a statement of praise for the measure, which would end the state’s 32-year-old ban on new nuclear plants.
“The nuclear energy industry welcomes this common-sense vote to lift the moratorium on new nuclear energy in Wisconsin,” Flint said. “This decision appropriately gives the state the option to consider nuclear energy along with all other electricity sources in the planning of its energy future.”
The bill now awaits Gov. Scott Walker’s signature.
“The bipartisan support for the repeal of the moratorium reflects the collective wisdom of an array of stakeholders, including business, labor and environmental leaders within Wisconsin,” Flint said. “They recognize the long-term importance of being able to consider clean, reliable nuclear energy in the development of a diverse low-carbon energy portfolio. This is a wise decision that we hope will inspire change in other states that similarly have unnecessarily limited their ability to expand the use of the nation’s largest source of carbon-free electricity — nuclear energy.”
