National Nuclear Security Administration issued the following announcement on Aug. 27.

The Office of Secure Transportation (OST) at the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) welcomed 24 federal agents at a graduation ceremony July 17 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, upon successful completion of Nuclear Materials Courier training.

OST is responsible for the safe and secure transport of government-owned special nuclear materials in the contiguous United States.

“These candidates put in a lot of hard work and are now members of one of the most elite security forces in the federal government,” said Vincent Fisher, NNSA’s Assistant Deputy Administrator for Secure Transportation. “OST has an unparalleled safety and security record in its mission to transport national security cargoes throughout the Nation and these new agents will help us continue that tradition.”

This graduating class is the largest since 2010. Fisher said the increased number is due to a modular training schedule that offers classes multiple times per year to accommodate more candidates.

In 21 weeks of rigorous training, the graduates demonstrated high degrees of skill in the use of firearms, small unit tactics, convoy operations, physical readiness, and tractor-trailer driving.

OST has driven more than a hundred million miles without a fatal accident or release of radioactive material during 43 years of service.

The new graduates have been assigned to Amarillo, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
