The Battelle Energy Alliance recently named Mark Peters director of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), effective on Oct. 1.

Peters previously was the associate laboratory director for Argonne National Laboratory’s Energy and Global Security directorate where he was involved in energy research and national security. He  is considered to be an expert in the area of nuclear fuel technology and nuclear waste management.

“Mark’s recognized leadership in all fields of energy research—including energy storage, renewable energy, energy efficiency and nuclear energy—and national security makes him an ideal choice as the next Lab Director of INL,” Ron Townsend, chair of Battelle’s board of managers said. “As the leading research institution for nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options and critical infrastructure, INL will benefit from the strong leadership and passionate commitment that Mark has demonstrated throughout his career.”

Peters holds a doctorate in geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago and has completed the Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program at the university’s Booth School of Business. He has appeared before Congress to provide information relating to nuclear matters including nonproliferation, fuel cycling and waste disposal. He also was named an American Nuclear Society Fellow.

Peters will be taking the place of John Grossenbacher, who announced that he would be stepping down in November 2014.
