Entergy Corp. recently announced that personnel at the Indian Point Energy Center will be taking part in security equipment testing and training drills that will occur over a three week period.

The training will involve simulated artillery fire and other weaponry. Those in the surrounding area may hear these sounds and law enforcement agencies have been informed of this activity.

Security officers will be utilizing Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Systems (MILES) to recreate the effects of live weaponry, specifically the sound. The company states that this technology is often used in counter-terrorism and military training operations.

This activity will conclude following an evaluation of security exercises that will be conducted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and they will be investigating the facility’s capabilities in this area and will offer guidance should improvements be necessary.

The Indian Point Energy Center is located in Buchanan, New York, and houses two nuclear power plants that are capable of producing approximately 2,000 megawatts of energy. This would be enough to provide electricity and they support approximately 25 percent of energy used by homes, public facilities and businesses in Westchester County and in New York City.

Entergy specializes in the generation and distribution of electricity.
