The second nuclear reactor unit at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant has resumed its electrical operations, Entergy announced on Saturday.

The reactor was shut down earlier this month in order to complete maintenance work, including replacing water seals housed between the reactor and its vessel. The plant was shut down because there had been water leakages at the facility and repair work could not be completed safely if the reactor were in operation.

The company stated that there was no risk of radiation being released from the plant prior to its shutdown.

The Indian Point plant houses two nuclear reactors, Units 2 and 3. When combined, both reactors generated approximately 2,000 megawatts. During the outage, Unit 2 at the facility continued its operations at full capacity and has done so for approximately 557 days. Prior to its shut down, Unit 3 had been in operation for 68 consecutive days.

According to the company, electricity generated at the Indian Point facility is capable of providing electricity to two million average homes. Electricity is distributed into the Con Edison system that serves Westchester County and five boroughs of New York City.

The facility supports approximately 1,000 permanent staff positions and approximately 150 contractors.
