The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it will be taking part in side events during the Paris Climate Conference, which began on Monday.

Over the course of the conference, countries will be presenting their respective climate-mitigation strategies, and an international agreement is expected to be made over the two weeks of deliberations and discussions.

Side events that the agency lists include the IAEA and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) hosting the “Why the Climate Needs Nuclear Energy presentations, which will take place on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 10 and 11, at 1:15 p.m. and 11:15 a.m. local time, respectively. The event will focus on what nuclear generation can offer to sustainability efforts.

On Monday, Dec. 7, there will be a United Nations-sponsored event, “Pathways to Sustainable Energy for a Climate Friendly World” and IAEA Deputy Director General, at which Mikhail Chudakov will be speaking, starting at 6:30 p.m.

“Many countries expect nuclear power to play an important role in their energy mix in the coming decades,” IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said. “It is one of the lowest emitters of carbon dioxide among energy sources, considering emissions through the entire life cycle.”
