Hitachi-GE courts Japanese firms for U.K. nuclear plant project

Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy Ltd. hosted a suppliers forum this week at the British Embassy in Tokyo centering around the plan to build a new U.K. nuclear plant on the Isle of Anglesey, off the coast of Wales.

Hitachi-GE said representatives from approximately 40 companies attended the event. The plat is expected to be operational by the early 2020s.

The forum’s goal was to facilitate partnerships between the two nations. Hitachi-GE officials presented the details of the Wylfa project and the potential for Japanese companies to grow in Wales and elsewhere in the U.K.

There was a question-and-answer session following the presentations regarding opportunities with the plant project. Hitachi-GE said this was the first forum of its kind to be held in Japan by the U.K.

This nuclear plant project will be built by Horizon Nuclear Power, and the plant will use Hitachi-GE advanced boiling water reactors.

The companies have held similar forums in Wales and Gloucester.
