Georgia Power recently placed the CA01 module for Unit 3 into place at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Waynesboro, Georgia as part of an expansion project.

The CA01 module was the project’s heaviest lift to date, weighing in at  approximately 1,140 tons. It measures 70 feet in height and 80 feet wide.

The Vogtle expansion project includes the addition of two nuclear reactors. Currently the plant has two reactors in operation. The new reactors are expected to have an electrical output of 1,100 megawatts each. With the project’s completion, the facility will become the leading nuclear generation facility in the U.S. capable of producing enough power for approximately 1 million businesses and residences, the company said.

Southern Nuclear is overseeing the construction of the new reactor units and will be tasked with their operation once completed. Georgia Power will own 45.7 percent of the new units with the remaining ownership falling under the Oglethorpe Power Corp., Dalton Utilities and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia.

Georgia Power recently completed multiple transmission upgrades and installations at the site in preparation to connect the new units to Georgia’s power grid.
