Nuclear services provider GE Hitatchi Nuclear Energy reached a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency (VAEA) Monday in order to facilitate the country’s understanding of light water reactor technology.

Both GE Hitatchi and the VAEA will cooperate on the training and development of workers in Vietnam for its civilian nuclear power program. With this agreement in place, the company will provide working experience to VAEA staff in areas relating to project management, quality assurance and the safety culture of the nuclear energy industry.

“As Vietnam looks to low-carbon nuclear power to meet its burgeoning energy needs, we will continue to support the building of the nation’s nuclear power infrastructure,” Senior Vice President of GE Hitatchi David Sledzik said.

The company has signed other agreements similar to this including one in February with the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety as well as another with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Electric Power University in 2014.

Vietnam aims to construct approximately 10,000 megawatts’ worth of nuclear generation capacity by 2030 as well as provide technology and human resource training and support to meet the country’s needs.
