FirstEnergy Corp. launched a new campaign, “The Switch is On,” this week to highlight the company’s efforts in supporting clean-energy sources and development.

The company said over 33 percent of energy generated by its power plants came from carbon-free sources in 2015. Among that amount, 31.9 million megawatt hours were generated from nuclear power plants operated by FirstEnergy. The company also said it has been closing less-efficient power plants since 2012.

“FirstEnergy has a long history of environmental stewardship and investments in clean energy, including more than $10 billion to enhance environmental performance of the company’s generating fleet since the Clean Air Act became law in 1970,” FirstEnergy President and CEO Chuck Jones said. “We also are one of the region’s largest providers of renewable energy, from contracted wind and solar and pumped-storage hydro resources. While the transition to a cleaner energy future will take time, ‘The Switch is On’ – our ultimate goal is to continue to deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our customers through cleaner, smarter and more-sustainable technologies.”

The campaign consists of print ads in newspapers and journals, radio ads and billboards throughout Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania. There is also an accompanying website that highlights the company’s goals toward clean power and environmental consciousness.
