Approximately $116 billion is being spent in active projects in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., many of them from the energy sector, an Industrial Info Resources report released on Monday said.

Major energy companies involved in these projects include Dominion Resources, Exelon Corp., Tokyo Gas and SCANA Corp., among others.

The projects include expansions to commercial nuclear power plants, off-shore wind farms and the development of export terminals for the utilization of liquefied natural gas.

Industrial Info Resources (IIR) said there are approximately 37,200 operational power plants and pre-commissioned power plants listed within its database. These plants are spread nationally and are estimated to have a value of approximately $6.27 trillion. IIR said its database also includes information pertaining to canceled and suspended projects related to the U.S. energy sector.

In relation to capital spending, developed economies are investing in renovating and replacing aging infrastructure and renewable sources of energy. Governments are also proposing increased legislative measures to limit carbon emissions from their power plants.
