EDF Energy, one of the U.K.’s largest energy companies, issued a statement this past week welcoming the appointment of Tom Greatrex as the new chief executive at the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA).

Greatrex is taking the place of Keith Parker, who has decided to step down.

Greatrex previously served as a Labor Member of Parliament (MP) for Rutherglen and Hamilton West. Greatrex said he looks forward to working with the NIA and emphasized the importance of the nuclear industry with regard to low carbon generation as a means to reach domestic and international carbon emission reduction efforts. He also noted that the nuclear industry provides over a thousand jobs throughout the U.K. and that there are opportunities for growth within the industry.

EDF states that nuclear energy and new nuclear projects offer what it claims to be the most reliable form of low-carbon energy available. These projects include the Hinkley Point C construction in Somerset.

NIA Chairman John Hutton stated that Greatrex has the necessary experience and leadership qualities that will benefit the nuclear industry in the U.K.

The NIA acts as a representative organization for the country’s civil nuclear industry, which in the U.K. includes approximately 260 companies.
