The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a funding opportunity on Friday that will support the research and development of nuclear reactor designs and concepts.

Through a competitive process, the department aims to facilitate collaborative partnerships with top performers in the nuclear energy industry and top research laboratories across the country. The department is currently accepting solicitations on concepts and developmental project that could be completed by 2035.

“We have been encouraged by recent interest in advanced reactor technology,” Acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy John Kotek said. “We believe this funding opportunity will foster scientific innovation to advance the goals of the department in developing clean energy technologies.”

As part of the process, the department will fund two projects with approximately $6 million apiece. Up to $3.6 million will come directly from the department, and the remaining amount will be through a federally funded research and development center. Interested companies and entities should note that there is a cost-sharing requirement of $1.5 million.

Interested parties must submit a letter of intent by Aug. 31, and full applications will be due by Oct. 5. There will also be a webinar session detailing the project and the application process at 1 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 24.

The DOE is a Cabinet-level department concerned with the United States’ policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material.
