U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research projects received 33 awards from R&D Magazine for 2015.

To be eligible for the awards, technology must be advanced in development to the point of being marketable and in operational condition the previous year, in this case 2014. The publication awards 100 projects across the country, recognizing excellence in innovation.

“The pace of change for the basic sciences and for American energy technologies is dramatically accelerating,” DOE Under Secretary Lynn Orr said. “These awards demonstrate that some of the nation’s most innovative research and development is taking place at the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories.”

National laboratories that received award recognition include Sandia National Laboratories, with five awards; the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with five awards; the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with seven awards; and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with six awards.

The DOE said many projects recognized were also partnerships with private companies and academic institutions. The publication has been issuing awards since 1962, and the DOE has won approximately 800 awards since their inception.

Judging focused on the technical significance, usefulness and unique qualities of research projects and technology development across industrial, academic and governmental research efforts.
