AREVA subsidiary AREVA TN recently added to its used-fuel storage portfolio with two long-term contracts worth a combined $200 million to supply canisters to several undisclosed U.S. utilities.

The company will provide the utilities with NUHOMS dry-shielded canisters and NUHOMS horizontal storage systems. The canisters are approved for use with fuel assemblies from both boiling-water and pressurized-water reactors, and are suitable for storing high-burn-up, short-cooled fuel. The NUHOMS horizontal storage system is the industry leader in earthquake resistance. Housing the utilities’ canisters on site, the system offers increased safety through side-by-side concrete structures.

“AREVA has built long-term customer relationships based on the strong performance and the safety track record of our technologies,” Greg Vesey, AREVA TN America’s senior vice president, said. “We continue to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for our customers while maintaining the highest level of safety in our operations.”

AREVA TN also services utilities in over 30 countries and is the United States’ leading used-fuel canister supplier, with approximately 1,000 AREVA canisters currently used at over 30 U.S. sites.
