NuScale Power and AREVA, Inc., recently signed a contract for the collaboration of NuScale’s technology and AREVA’s nuclear fuel designs and testing services.

The contract obligates AREVA to make modifications to its successful HTP pressurized water reactor fuel design. The modifications will enable the design to be incorporated into the Design Certification Application of NuScale’s 50MWe small, modular nuclear reactor.

In addition, AREVA will create analyses to supplement the company’s design and modifications. The component flow-induced vibration, control rod assembly drop alignment tests, and fuel critical heat flux will be included in the team’s analyses report.

“AREVA is a world leader in nuclear fuel design and fuel services,” NuScale Power Chief Operating Officer Dale Atkinson said. “Their capabilities and experience supporting new plant design and testing, and servicing America’s operating nuclear energy fleet will provide significant expertise in fulfilling our design certification requirements.”

“With decades of experience in the American nuclear industry, AREVA remains committed to providing its expertise and services to customers like NuScale Power,” AREVA COO Craig Ranson

said. “This supports the advancement of nuclear energy in the U.S. energy mix as a reliable source of low-carbon electricity.”
