The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Tuesday that teachers representing eight countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa recently participated in the Arab-European Summer School on Energy Education (AESSEE).
The IAEA offered detailed information for participants relating to the legal aspects for nuclear technology, research and science.
“The introduction of this complex topic by the IAEA Legal Adviser in a very simple and exciting way has motivated the participants to act as ambassadors of a non-proliferation culture in their societies and schools and to be more active in spreading this knowledge,” Saleh Ismail, chairman of the AESSEE, said.
During the course of the program, IAEA Director of the Legal Affairs Office Peri Johnson presented an overview of the IAEA’s role in the development of international frameworks to pursue the safe use of nuclear science for peaceful applications. She also detailed recent developments of global legal matters that included the beginning of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage and the adoption of the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety.
Teachers represented Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Lebanon, Oman, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. The IAEA anticipates that approximately 25,000 students in the region will be able to benefit from this program.
