Exelon Corp. announced on Monday that the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant has been taken offline in order to complete refueling and maintenance on the facility.

The power plant is located along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, approximately 20 miles northeast of Rochester. The facility has a capacity of approximately 580 megawatts of electricity.

“The safe, reliable operation of Ginna is always our top priority,” Site Vice President Joe Pacher said. “In addition to replacing nearly one third of the reactor’s fuel, outage specialists will be inspecting, enhancing and testing plant equipment. To complete this important work, more than 700 additional nuclear professionals will be on-site, providing a crucial boost to the upstate economy before the winter season.”

Shutdowns of this kind are a regular occurrence for nuclear reactors: every 18 months, facilities receive replacement fuel for one-third of their stock and necessary maintenance. Inspection activity also takes place during this time to ensure operational efficiency and safety. These kinds of operations are not possible while the facility is online due to safety and health concerns.

The R.E. Ginna facility is capable of providing electricity for approximately 500,000 residences and business with no carbon emissions.

Exelon Generation operates three nuclear power plants, twelve fossil power plants, two landfill gas plants and one pumped storage hydroelectric power plant in the state.
