AREVA announced on Thursday that they have been selected for the manufacture and eventual installation of an integrated head assembly as a part of the expansion project at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina.

The plant is owned by the South Carolina Electric and Gas Corp., a subsidiary of the SCANA Corp. The nuclear facility is currently constructing two nuclear reactors that will supplement its current 966 megawatt unit with two 1,117 megawatt units.

“We are honored to work with South Carolina Electric and Gas as the company makes this important investment in the continued production of safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity,” George Beam, senior vice president of AREVA Inc.’s Installed Base Services, said.

AREVA states that this integrated assembly will replace existing components above the reactor vessel that will allow more efficient component removal during a regular or emergency outage at the plant. The company has been successful in the installation of these components at 10 facilities across the United States, most recently at the Ameren Mo. Callaway Energy Center.

AREVA is a leading company in the area of nuclear power generation. They specialize in the development, testing and engineering of nuclear fuel units, reactor design and reactor components. Their global headquarters is in Paris.
