JCP&L completes $10 million expansion for West Amwell Township

Just in time for the increased energy demands of summer, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) completed a substation expansion for West Amwell Township at a cost of $10 million.

"Completing this project in advance of the high-demand summer season adds resiliency to the transmission system now and helps meet the growing demand for electricity in the long-term," vice president of operations at JCP&L Tony Hurley said. "The project was completed in a timely manner thanks to successful collaboration with local, county and state officials, ultimately benefiting local residents and businesses."

The expansion – which features a 120-ton transformer for converting voltage levels, four new circuit breakers for ensuring equipment protection, the installation of a half-mile of 230-kilovolt transmission line, and outage-preventing technology – will benefit 75,000 customers in Hunterdon and Mercer counties.

The work in West Amwell Township was part of JCP&L’s $267 million plan for maintenance and improvements at its facilities in 2015, ensuring a strong electrical system as the company’s 13-county service area grows.
