NRC sets public meeting on Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant performance

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced today that it will host a public meeting and open house on the performance of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant, in Hampton, New Hampshire, on June 18, reviewing the plant’s annual safety assessment with the general public.

“By assessing each plant’s performance in a comprehensive manner, we are able to focus our inspection resources on those areas most in need of attention,” NRC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman said.

The NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process uses a color-coded system to judge the performance of power plants, with those doing the best earning green. White, yellow and red signify more issues. The NRC issues color codes based on inspections and statistical measures of the plants’ performances. Plants earning anything below a green ranking are subject to additional oversight. Seabrook, which is owned by NextEra, maintained green status throughout 2014.

“Because Seabrook did not have any safety or security issues rising above low significance in 2014, we are not currently planning any inspections above and beyond our normal reviews,” Dorman said.

The meeting will be at Hampton’s Best Western Plus–The Inn at Hampton, beginning at 7 p.m. with a presentation and question-and-answer session that will be followed by the open house.
