Nine Mile Unit 1 nuclear plant returns to full operations

The Nine Mile Unit 1 Nuclear Station returned to its full operations Tuesday after nearly a month of being offline, Exelon announced.

The unit began its refueling outage on March 16 in order for technicians at the plant to safely dispose of used nuclear material and replace it with clean and viable fuel. During this time, 1,300 technicians were brought in for its biennial refueling, inspections and maintenance.

The plant is 7 miles from Oswego, New York. When at full operation and capacity, the plant is able to produce enough power for over 1 million residences, the company stated.

Exelon is considered a leading force as a competitive energy provider. It services 48 states, Washington, D.C., and parts of Canada. In 2014, the company provided energy services to approximately 2.5 million consumers in residential, commercial and public sectors.
