NRC open house to discuss Summer nuclear plant performance

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled an open house Tuesday to discuss the safety performance findings of last year’s assessment of the South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) Summer Nuclear Station.

The open house begins at 6 p.m. in the library at the McCrorey-Liston School of Technology, 1978 Monticello Road (State Highway 215 South), in Blair, S.C. NRC staff, including inspectors and staff from the Region IV office in Arlington, Texas, will be available for one-on-one discussions.

A second public meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. NRC staff members will be available to discuss the agency’s assessment of construction of the two new units in 2014.

“NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plant’s safety, and each year we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said. “Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.”

The NRC staff review determined that the SCE&G plant, located about 26 miles northwest of Columbia, met the agency’s standards for public and environmental safety performance.
