Public opinion survey indicates support for nuclear energy

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) said its semiannual public opinion survey indicates the public supports nuclear energy with a high degree. The survey, conducted between Feb. 18 and March 1 in part by Bisconti Research, Inc., and Quest Global Research, found that 83 percent of respondents stated it was important for the U.S. nuclear industry to act as a leading force in global markets. Energy Department awards $60 million to 68 promising nuclear projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said last week that it has awarded more than $60 million to 68 nuclear projects from across the country that have the potential to create scientific breakthroughs that strengthen the nation’s energy security and cut harmful greenhouse-gas emissions. TVA: Watts Bar Unit 2 may be operational by year's end

The Tennessee Valley Authority’s Watts Bar Unit 2 plant is in the final phases of construction, and a TVA official recently said it is on track to be the first new nuclear plant of the 21st century. The TVA said the facility, upon completion, will generate approximately 1,150 megawatts of safe, carbon-free power. It’s estimated that Unit 2 will help TVA avoid emissions of 6 to 8 million tons of carbon dioxide a year. Read More »
