Russian nuclear industry officials, IAEA hold annual consultations

Nikolai Spasskiy, Rosatom's deputy CEO for International Affairs, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya met for annual consultations this week.

During the talks, multiple areas of cooperation were discussed between the Russian Federation and its nuclear operations with the IAEA, especially the country’s role in IAEA programs and Russian representation within the agency’s Secretariat.

Rosatom said Spasskiy was joined by Deputy Chairman of Rostechnadzor, Alexei Ferapontov, and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna Vladimir Voronkov. The delegation from Russia also met with director generals in charge of various areas within the IAEA, including science and applications, human resources, nuclear power, and nuclear safety and security.

Discussions also covered implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with the Iranian government regarding its civil nuclear program, an international agreement that allows the international community to monitor nuclear activity in Iran to serve non-proliferation efforts in exchange for eliminating economic sanctions and to allow the country to pursue a peaceful nuclear energy program.

Rosatom and the IAEA said the consultations were beneficial and would continue in the future.
