AREVA NP said on Monday that it has been hired to carry out decontamination operations at the Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant, partially owned by Vattenfall Europe Nuclear Energy, near Hamburg, Germany.
AREVA staff will carry out decontamination to reduce radiation levels in the reactor pressure vessel, piping and auxiliary systems.
“This decontamination technology has been used reliably in over 30 nuclear facilities worldwide, including boiling and pressurized water reactors,” Michael Cerruti, sales executive vice president of AREVA Reactors & Services Business Group, said. “This new contract confirms customers’ confidence in our decontamination technology for all types of nuclear power plants.”
AREVA said the project will begin before the end of the year and be finished by the end of the second quarter of 2016. The company will be utilizing its AMDA and CORD UV techniques to facilitate decontamination of the facility. These processes consist of the injection of chemicals into the primary circuit. The company said that following this process, the only byproducts are carbon dioxide and water.
