U.N. approves resolution to consider IAEA annual report

The United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday to consider the International Atomic Energy Agency's annual report.

A total of 99 representatives voted in favor of the resolution, with none opposed and 10 countries abstaining from voting.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano introduced the agency’s report in the General Assembly, noting the capabilities of the agency in responding to crises over this past year. Amano also said the IAEA played a key part in implementing the Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran and the international community alongside those countries that signed the agreement, as well as the U.N. Security Council.

In opening the meeting, Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft called for a moment of silence for victims of terrorist attacks in cities around the globe over this past week. Lykketoft also said a U.N. response is necessary, and that it should be comprehensive. Lykketoft also called for the U.N. to pursue a political solution to the current Syrian conflict.
