Bloomberg BNA, Nuclear Matters to hold regional nuclear discussion

Bloomberg BNA and Nuclear Matters said Thursday they will be hosting a Sept. 30 event that will explore the role of nuclear energy in the Northeast region of the U.S.

The Sept. 30 event, "A Chain Reaction: The Role of Nuclear Energy in PJM's Energy Mix" is the third of a series of events underwritten by Nuclear Matters. The event will be held Sept. 30 at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh.

"The low cost of natural gas throughout the region, changes emanating from the EPA Clean Power Plan and a growing penetration of intermittent renewable technologies pose economic challenges to the nuclear power plants serving the PJM service region," Bloomberg BNA  Head of Research Chris Gadomski said. "Nuclear plays a key role in Pennsylvania's energy mix and this event will explore from multiple perspectives what role it may play in the region going forward."

The featured speaker will be Lawrence Lindsey, current president and CEO of the Lindsey Group and former chief economic adviser to George W. Bush's presidential campaign in 2000.

Major topics that will be covered include recent nuclear history in Pennsylvania, the possible impacts of closing regional nuclear reactors, implications for nuclear energy with relation to the clean power plan and future prospects in the area.

Additional speakers include  PJM Interconnection Vice President for Operation Micheal Bryson; Westinghouse President and CEO Danny Roderick; Nuclear Energy Institute COO Maria Korsnick, FirstEnergy Solutions Chief Nuclear Officer Sam Belcher, Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and CEO Gene Barr and Pennsylvania State University Nuclear Engineering Program Chairman Arthur Motta.
