EU council applauds Iran nuclear agreement

The Council of the European Union (EU) released a set of conclusions today regarding the recent agreement between Iran and the international community on its nuclear energy program.

The council stated that the agreement reached between Iran, China, Russia, the U.S., the United Kingdom, France and Germany is historic. It also expressed appreciation for being represented at negotiations and for playing an active role in the agreement.

The council noted the role of the Austrian government as hosts to the negotiations, and the work of the United Kingdom, France and Germany in their efforts with regard to the Tehran agreement.

The EU council has given its support to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and urges that all parties to the agreement work toward the quick implementation of the agreement.

As part of the agreement, Iran will gradually be able to develop a nuclear power infrastructure under the watchful eye of the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure that nuclear power facilities and other related entities are not pursuing the building of nuclear weapons. The deal calls for economic sanctions against Iran to be lifted as the evaluation process takes place.

Concluding the statement, the council stated that it invites its representative to explore possibilities to promote a cooperative regional framework with Iran.
