The U.S. Senate recently rejected an attempt to table consideration of an amendment that would effectively reauthorize the nation’s Export-Import Bank, a move supported by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).

The bank’s charter is scheduled to expire on June 30. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) offered the amendment reauthorization to HR 1735, the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2016.

“The Nuclear Energy Institute welcomes today’s show of support for the Export-Import Bank,” Daniel Lipman, vice president for supplier and international programs of the Nuclear Energy Institute, said. “The Export-Import Bank is one of the country’s most important tools to increase exports and create jobs. It is vital to U.S. competitiveness in the global nuclear energy market. Without the Ex-Im Bank, U.S. exports to the large and growing global market for nuclear energy would plummet.

“NEI thanks the many senators who supported the Export-Import Bank today,” Lipman said. “The nuclear energy industry will continue to work with a sense of urgency with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to reauthorize the bank for the betterment of the U.S. economy."
